Iran Warns UK and France Over Potential Naval Presence in Strait of Hormuz

Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi cautioned both countries against escalating tensions, stating that any military presence in the strategic waterway would provoke a swift reaction from Tehran. In a post on X, he argued that maritime security cannot be ensured through displays of military power, particularly by actors he accused of being complicit in regional instability through their support, involvement, or silence.

Meanwhile, both the UK and France have begun moving military assets into the region. The British Ministry of Defence announced the deployment of the destroyer HMS Dragon to the Middle East as part of a potential mission to safeguard maritime navigation. France, for its part, informed Iran and the United States on May 6 that its aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle, carrying Rafale fighter jets, had passed through the Suez Canal and was heading toward the Gulf of Aden. Around 50 countries are reported to be participating in the broader mission.

French President Emmanuel Macron indicated that deployment directly within the Strait of Hormuz is not currently planned, but emphasized readiness if necessary. “Deployment has never been the objective, but we are prepared,” he said during a press conference.
