Kim Jong Un enters China over newly opened Yalu bridge to Dandong
North Korea's leader crossed into Dandong on a bridge that sat idle for 12 years, about a week after it finally opened to traffic.
North Korean leader Kim Jong Un crossed into the Chinese border city of Dandong on Saturday, traveling over the New Yalu River Bridge, according to South Korean government officials. The four-lane crossing officially opened to traffic only about a week earlier, 12 years after its construction was completed.
Reuters, citing a South Korean official, reported that Chinese Premier Li Qiang met Kim in Dandong. Most of what is known about the trip so far comes from Seoul: Yonhap News Agency quoted a government source on the arrival, and Report.az, relaying that account, said no further details had been disclosed. The itinerary and the length of the stay had not been made public in those reports.
A bridge finished in 2014, opened in 2026
The New Yalu River Bridge stretches 3 km (1.9 miles) across the Yalu River, the waterway that marks much of the frontier between the two countries. It was completed in 2014 but did not open for more than a decade. Its opening adds a modern road link to a border where traffic has long depended on the older, single-lane Sino-Korean Friendship Bridge between Dandong and the North Korean city of Sinuiju.
At least one Chinese specialist sees the opening as a practical turning point. Lu Chao, an expert on China-North Korea relations at the Liaoning Academy of Social Sciences, said, as quoted by Reuters, that "The opening of the bridge has resolved a major bottleneck in China-North Korea trade logistics." He added: "With the logistics constraint eased, bilateral trade is likely to increase further." China is North Korea's largest trading partner, so changes at this crossing carry real weight for the North's external commerce.
Timing and signals
The calendar adds symbolism. The visit comes a day before China marks the anniversary of its entry into the 1950-1953 Korean War, in which Chinese forces fought on the North Korean side. Kim was last known to have traveled to China in September 2025, when he attended the celebrations marking the 80th anniversary of Victory Day in Beijing. Chinese President Xi Jinping then paid a state visit to Pyongyang in June.
The trip also unfolds against Pyongyang's deepening ties with Moscow since Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022. A visible meeting with China's premier on the border shows that the North's turn toward Russia has not come at the expense of its oldest patron. Pyongyang has meanwhile hardened its line on its weapons programs, calling its nuclear status irreversible and accusing the International Atomic Energy Agency of double standards.
What it means: The setting is the message. By arriving over a bridge that took 12 years to open, Kim tied his visit to infrastructure rather than ceremony, and a meeting with Li Qiang, who heads China's State Council and its economic management, points the same way. A modern road crossing at Dandong lowers the physical cost of trade with the North's dominant partner, but UN Security Council sanctions still restrict much of what North Korea can sell abroad. Whether the bridge becomes a busier artery will depend on how Beijing weighs those obligations against its interest in a stable neighbor, details neither side has yet spelled out.
