About 650 Ukrainian drones flew toward the Moscow region overnight into Oct. 6, Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said, in a raid that Russian state media ranked among the largest on the capital region in two years. One man was killed and six people were wounded, regional officials said, while independent monitors reported that the region's main oil storage and pipeline hub had been hit.

Russian state news agency TASS described the raid as the second-largest drone assault on Moscow and the surrounding region in the past two years, TRT World reported, citing AFP. The Kyiv Independent, citing Russian state media, characterized it as the largest the region had seen over the same period. Either way, the scale places it alongside the record drone raid on Moscow's refinery belt during the final day of Russia's Duma election.

What Moscow officials reported

"650 drones flew towards the Moscow region. The majority of them were destroyed by air defense forces at a distance. 105 drones were destroyed as they approached Moscow," Sobyanin said, according to the Kyiv Independent. TASS separately reported that air defenses brought down 185 drones over 16 municipalities of the wider Moscow region during the night.

Moscow regional Governor Andrei Vorobyov confirmed the death. "Unfortunately, there has been a fatality. A 20-year-old man was killed in an attack in the settlement of Radumlya in the Solnechnogorsk municipal district," he said, as quoted by TASS. "I wish his family strength as they endure this terrible loss." Six people were hurt, according to preliminary information, and emergency crews were sent to locations where houses, outbuildings and vehicles were damaged, TASS said.

A fuel hub 40 kilometers from the Kremlin

The Kyiv Independent reported that drones struck the Volodarsk Linear Production and Dispatch Center near the village of Konstantinovo, citing the Telegram monitoring channel Exilenova Plus and the independent Russian outlet Astra. The outlet described the site as the largest oil facility in the Moscow region, handling about 3 million tons of petroleum products a year. It sits roughly 40 kilometers from central Moscow and about 450 kilometers from the Ukrainian border, and pipelines connect it to the main airports serving the capital, the report said. The sources reviewed for this article did not include an official Russian statement on damage at the site. Ukrainian officials had not publicly commented on the overnight attack in those reports, and the Kyiv Independent said it could not immediately verify the reports of a strike on the facility.

The overnight raid fits a pattern of escalating long-range attacks by both sides. Russia and Ukraine have stepped up strikes on civilian and industrial infrastructure, including energy, transport and port facilities, TRT World reported. Russia has also said it will intensify attacks on infrastructure, including targets in Kyiv, as winter approaches, the broadcaster added. Moscow has also told foreign diplomats to leave Kyiv again, a warning Ukraine said no embassy had acted on.

What it means

The numbers matter more than the ranking dispute. By the Russian count, 650 drones flew in a single night toward a region at least 450 kilometers from the Ukrainian border, and at least some appear to have reached a fuel hub that links the capital's storage network to its airports. That suggests Ukraine retains the production base and launch capacity to mass long-range attacks deep inside Russia, not just harass border regions. For Moscow, the cost is not only physical damage but the need to hold large air-defense resources around the capital as it prepares its own winter campaign against Ukrainian infrastructure. With the war heading into a fifth winter, both sides are now fighting a parallel energy war, and the Moscow region has become one of its front lines.
