Italy Issues Weather Alerts Across 12 Regions as Severe Storms and Flooding Batter Florence

ROME — Italian authorities placed 12 regions under severe weather alerts after an intense Atlantic storm system swept across northern and central parts of the country, triggering flash floods, damaging winds, and localized urban chaos.

The Department of Civil Protection issued yellow and orange alerts covering parts of Tuscany, Emilia-Romagna, Liguria, Lombardy, Lazio, and Campania, among others. Forecasters warned of sustained atmospheric instability, frequent lightning, and localized cloudbursts capable of overwhelming municipal drainage infrastructure.

Florence Impacted by Intense Cloudburst

In Tuscany, regional capital Florence experienced severe localized flooding described by local emergency services as an intense downpour. Inundations inundated underpasses, stalled traffic corridors, and breached historical structures, with water briefly entering perimeter halls of the Uffizi Gallery before specialized response teams contained the intrusion. No damage to primary Renaissance art collections was reported.

Emergency response crews conducted dozens of interventions across northern transit corridors to clear fallen trees and pump water from low-lying roadways. Civil defense officials urged residents to avoid non-essential travel and remain vigilant near riverbanks as saturated ground conditions elevate the risk of sudden mudslides across hilly terrain.
